I run into this occasionally while working in multiple terminal windows.
What I usually do is use bufed mode which lets you update buffers modified
on disk, assuming that you don't have conflicting local changes.

In the rare case of conflicting changes you may need external help, say
writing the buffer with a new name and using meld, or using your revision
control tools to generate a patch.
