Thanks Robin and Manfred.

The hostname setting appeared to cause this problem. Now I can continue to enjoy using JED.  Still the best after using it more than 25 years on various platforms!

This has solved that problem for me in the past:

   scutil --set HostName $(scutil --get LocalHostName)
