message history?

Sometimes I would like to read older messages from the status line.
A history buffer would be great (VMS TPU/EVE has it, an editor quite
similar to jed).

I could write such a function by myself, but then I would have to
substitute all message() calls with my_message() in every jed library code.

Is there another way, like function overloading or something similar?
