This explains a lot. However, when I test with

Jed Version: 0.99.18
S-Lang Version: 2.0.6

the following file:

  % slang-2.0.6-byte-compile-bug.sl:

  static variable foo = "bar";
  variable str = "this is $foo"$;
  message(str);

  variable str2 = "my $HOME is my castle"$;

  message(str2);

  % byte_compile_file("slang-2.0.6-byte-compile-bug.sl", 0);
  % () = evalfile("slang-2.0.6-byte-compile-bug.sl");

everything works fine!

Is there more known about the specific conditions needed to trigger the
segmentation fault?
