move a spot

Hi,

I have problems with the moving of a spot, when inserting any text.

#v+
      check_region(1);
      insert_char('}');
      exchange_point_and_mark();
      insert("\\text"+attrib+"{");
      pop_spot();
#v-

This does, what it should, if the mark defines a canonical region.
Otherwise not.

What's going wrong here? Why doesn't move the spot, if I insert at the
spot any text?
