Still more info needed: do you use it under X or on the console? 

xjed under X-window should work "out of the box"
jed in a terminal-window has problems (IMHO rxvt seems to work best)
jed at the console can be made working (with some drawbacks) --
see Help>Browse_Docs>linuxkeys.txt, more explanation at request.
