My apologies for being so sloppy.  Try this version.

    define edt_evaluate_cmd ()
    {
        variable cmd = strtrim (read_mini ("EDT:", "", ""));
        if (cmd == "exit")
          cmd = "exit_jed";
        eval (cmd);
    }
    setkey ("edt_evaluate_cmd", "\eOP\eOw");
