I would recommend
M-x view-mode
(with view-mode from jedmodes.sf.net/mode/view/) which sets the buffer to ro
uses a "view" keymap but keeps the syntax highlight.
Remember, that you cannot have split view of a buffer but not have one in
view ro and the other rw.
