Not jed selects the backup file~, but the shell does! See:
echo jed a*

Every command you use in the shell (grep, wc, etc) with wildcards also
operates on the backup files.

The solution: use vv

Addon: vv can rescue you from a inadvertently "rm a*", because it backups
the current version, too!
