It does not work if there are already the standard definitions:

define_syntax('\'', '"', $1);                   % string
define_syntax('"', '"', $1);                    % string

when I comment them out (with %) jed accepts the line

define_syntax('»', '"', $1);                    % string

This is really strange!

But it does not help: goto_match fails here also, when there is only one »
in a line. This is an dead end.
