This is one of the things that need to be worked out in the 0.99-19
development series.   Until a nice intuitive interface is available,
here are a few functions that may help:

define what_wchars ()

define delete_combining ()
{
   variable wchars = what_wchars ();
   if (length (wchars) < 2)
     return;
   del ();
   insert_char (wchars[0]);
   go_left (1);
}
