As far as I can see, matlab.sl does not assign any syntax to the
single quote character.  If you add 

 define_syntax ('\'', '\'', $1);

to the appropriate section of matlab.sl, then it will cause the
problem that you mentioned.  A partial solution is change the line

 set_syntax_flags ($1, 4);

to 

 set_syntax_flags ($1, 4|0x80);

Is this solution sufficient for your needs?
