Is the reproducible with the simplest such files?

This is the lock file that jed uses to indicate that the file is being
edited.  This file should vanish if you kill the buffer or save the
file.

Are you using the version of slang distributed with SuSE?  If so, try
using the one that I distribute.  Both SuSE and Redhat distribute
modified (and broken) versions of slang.
